Chapter Ten
Outside, Claire went to the men in relief. They were wearing tailored dark pants and shirts, together with jackets that covered their weapons. Bodyguard mode, in short. Their hair was brushed back and sunglasses rested in the top pocket of the jackets. They looked like every other “Security expert” littered around DC. Except they were her security experts, and their eyes warmed when they rested on her. As she left, they fell into step with her, half a pace behind. When she reached the door Nerio moved to open it for her and go out first. Vincenzo followed.
Her father’s office was a suite of rooms in the Russell, a gracious beaux-arts design near the Capitol. They walked out into the pale sunshine of the fall day, no words exchanged, the men still acting in their official capacity. Their official self-appointed capacity, that was. A car glided up as they exited, and Nerio opened the door for her. The limousine had thicker windows and doors than was usual for that model of Cadillac. Vincenzo got in the back, Nerio got behind the wheel.
Inside was all quiet luxury. As the car pulled away, Vincenzo drew Claire closer, and kissed her. She rested her head on his reassuringly broad shoulder and returned his kiss with fervor. What seemed like a long time later, she smiled up at him. “Bodyguards don’t usually behave that way.”
“I missed you,” he said simply.
“Are we done here?” Nerio said from the front of the car. “Because I want to get you home.”
“No,” she said. “Dad wants me to attend a press junket he’s holding in an hour. We have time to eat, that’s all.”
“Depends what you mean by eating.” Vincenzo touched her nose affectionately. “Are you hungry?”
She shook her head. “But I mean it, we only have an hour. Which in this city means forty minutes, because we have to get through the security checks.”
“You don’t go without us,” Nerio said.
She nodded. They’d agreed not to go public with their relationship until they knew more about the twins’ murder. As far as the media was concerned, she’d dated Nerio and helped to get his breed partner out of jail. Not that she was with both of them. “I need to tell you something.” She swallowed. This wouldn’t be easy.
“We’re all ears.” Nerio took a right.
“Dad wants a fast conclusion to the murder investigation. He didn’t say that, but it’s election year next year, and he wants a clear run at an office. Now he’s out of the running for President, we need to clear our desks and see what’s left. He still has a lot of supporters, and his opinion matters.”
“I thought he was in the race for the sake of it,” Nerio said. “A smokescreen for the real candidates until they have their shit ready.”
Oh, he knew his way around DC, all right. That was exactly what Claire had supposed. “I think he’s up to something. What it is, I don’t know yet. Something’s happened in the past couple of days.
